HOW TO RAISE A CHILD WITH A HIGH EQ
Encouraging Empathy and Caring
Unification Family Therapy
…Developmental psychologists point out that there are actually two components to empathy: an emotional reaction toward others, which normally develops in the first 6 years of a child’s life, and a cognitive reaction, which determines the degree to which older children are able to see the point of view or perspective of someone else…
…Kindness and consideration are part of your child’s genetic coding, but if these traits are not nourished, they will disappear…
…When children are unkind, thoughtless, and even cruel, most of the time we can trace the reasons for this “unnatural” behavior back to the home…
…In some families, religion plays an important part in the moral development of children… The way that parents live out their religion’s value system in their day-to-day lives is what is effective in influencing children….
…If you want your children to become more empathic, caring, and responsible, then you must expect this of them. You must make your family rules clear and consistent and not waiver from them. You must require them to be responsible.
Children as young as three should be expected to clean up after themselves and help with simple chores like setting the table. Chores and other responsibilities should increase with age and should not be contingent on rewards, not even on an allowance. Children should be expected to help around the house because helping others is the right thing to do.
…If you want your child to be thoughtful, considerate, and responsible… raise the bar on your expectations. It is easy to be a permissive parent…To raise more responsible children, parents must become more responsible themselves, and they can begin by overcoming their denial that spoiling children will not harm them. It will.
Involve your child in community service
Many schools across the country are beginning to require community service as a condition for high school graduation….
Committing yourself and your family to regularly helping others in organized projects will not only teach your children to be more concerned about others, it will also teach them social skills, the importance of cooperation, and the value of perseverance and following through…
The Universal Peace Federation (UPF) and the Family Federation for World Peace (FFWP) are the two most central organizations founded by Reverend Moon.
Founding President, James Mancham, Seychelles (1976-77), wrote: "Father Moon has created a global alliance of religious, academic, political, civic and business leaders to work together to promote global peace and create what he calls a unified world in which people live together in harmony, cooperation and co-prosperity."
