Children as young as three should be expected to clean up after themselves and help with simple chores like setting the table. Chores and other responsibilities should increase with age and should not be contingent on rewards, not even on an allowance. Children should be expected to help around the house because helping others is the right thing to do.

…If you want your child to be thoughtful, considerate, and responsible… raise the bar on your expectations. It is easy to be a permissive parent…To raise more responsible children, parents must become more responsible themselves, and they can begin by overcoming their denial that spoiling children will not harm them.
